Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated on Sunday that the ouster of Bashar al-Assad in Syria demonstrates that Russia and its allies can be defeated. This remark comes amid Poland’s ongoing support for Ukraine as it battles against Moscow’s forces, particularly since Russia’s invasion began nearly three years ago.
Moscow has provided military assistance to support Assad, a key ally of the Kremlin, in suppressing the opposition during Syria’s more than decade-long civil war. Tusk emphasized on the social media platform X, “The events in Syria have made the world realize once again, or at least they should, that even the most cruel regime may fall and that Russia and its allies can be defeated.”
Poland has positioned itself as a staunch ally of Ukraine, serving as a crucial logistics hub for Western military aid directed toward Kyiv. Additionally, on the same day, Ukraine echoed this sentiment by asserting that authoritarian regimes reliant on Moscow’s support are ultimately doomed to fall.
It is noteworthy that Assad was one of the few global leaders who recognized Russia’s annexation of Ukraine’s four eastern and southern regions in 2022.
