This month, the Navy conducted two significant weapons systems tests and announced a planned Future Unmanned Surface Vessel Industry Day scheduled for June 17, 2023, aimed at accelerating the development and procurement of future Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs).
On May 2, 2023, the Navy’s Strategic Systems Programs achieved a milestone by conducting the first sea-based cold-gas launch of its Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS) hypersonic missile. This launch method differs from traditional hot-launch techniques, as it ejects the missile from the platform before igniting the first stage. The Navy intends for this cold-gas approach to become the standard for launching hypersonic missiles from ships.
Vice Adm. Johnny Wolfe, the director of Strategic Systems Programs, explained that the cold-gas method allows for a safer launch by ensuring that the missile reaches a safe distance above the ship prior to ignition. Following the CPS missile test, the Navy also achieved the first-ever launch of a Solid Fuel Integral Rocket Ramjet (SFIRR) from an unmanned aerial vehicle operated by the U.S. Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division. This test involved live firing control on a BQM-34 target vehicle, demonstrating the vehicle’s maneuverability, control, and long-range accuracy.
Abbey Horning, the product director of NAWCWD’s Advanced Concepts, Prototyping, and Experimentation office, remarked that this successful integration advances their design and aligns with modern military needs. The Navy seeks to enhance its fleet with unmanned vessels and will host an industry day in Washington to discuss the Future Unmanned Surface Vessel Program, detailing that the craft will be an open ocean, high endurance, autonomous vessel built to commercial standards, capable of speeds exceeding 25 knots.
