China is making progress on a sixth-generation fighter, with preparations underway to research a combat aircraft by 2035. Efforts are on track and indicators in the semiofficial space have increased since 2019. Prototype flights for the J-XD are expected by 2028, with differing opinions on when a meaningful design will be revealed – late 2030s or early 2040s. China has described its future fighter as unmanned, but it is likely to be optionally manned. Advanced drones and collaborative combat aircraft are in development/testing. Development is progressing, with advancements in mastering jet engines and AI systems.
