The U.S. Space Force is expanding its unit-integration experiment beyond the pilot phase. Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman announced the integrated mission delta construct in September to align responsibility, authority, and resources within mission areas. The service chose positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) and electronic warfare as the first two mission areas to test the concept.
Lt. Gen. David Miller stated that the service has been analyzing lessons from the effort and made recommendations to Saltzman for the next phase. Significant efficiency improvements were seen in the PNT and electronic warfare integrated mission deltas. The team demonstrated the ability to quickly address service outages under the new structure.
While the integrated approach worked well for those two mission areas, it may not be suitable for all capability sets. Some functions may not require the Integrated Mission Delta structure. Miller emphasized that not every situation will necessitate this model and some areas may function better with a more focused responsibility scope.
The service is expected to announce plans for expansion in the coming weeks. Miller’s recommendations for the next candidates to implement the integrated model are under consideration. The goal is to continue improving efficiency and effectiveness in various mission areas within the U.S. Space Force.
