The U.S. Space Force’s $29.4 billion fiscal year 2025 budget request is $600 million lower than FY24, following three years of growth. The dip is constrained by funding limits imposed in the 2023 Fiscal Responsibility Act.
The Space Force’s budget has nearly doubled since its creation in December 2019, with a growth due to consolidation of systems and personnel under its purview. Service officials emphasize the need for continued funding as it takes on new responsibilities.
The largest portion of the Space Force’s spending request, $18.7 billion, will fund the development of satellites, ground systems, and technology modernization. A portion of the budget serves as “pass-through” funding for outside organizations.
The service also seeks $4.7 billion for satellite development to warn of missile threats, including the Next-Generation Overhead Persistent Infrared program. Other programs include Resilient Missile Warning and Tracking in various orbits, and funding for the Space Development Agency’s satellite launches.
