Iraqi air strikes on October 14, 2024, killed a senior Islamic State group leader named Shahadhah Allawi Salih Ulaywi al-Bajjari, also known as Abu Issa, along with three other militants in northeastern Iraq. The strikes were enabled by intelligence from the international anti-jihadist coalition, as announced by the US Central Command (CENTCOM). The US has 2,500 troops in Iraq and 900 in Syria as part of the coalition, which will end its military mission in Iraq within a year. The coalition was established in 2014 to help local forces retake territory from the jihadists in Iraq and Syria. Despite ISIS being defeated in Iraq in 2017 and in Syria in 2019, jihadist fighters still operate in remote desert areas.
