The U.S. Army is establishing a cross-functional team within its modernization branch to develop deep sensing capabilities, announced Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George. Details will be provided by Army Futures Command commander Gen. Jim Rainey at the Association of the U.S. Army’s Global Force Symposium in Huntsville, Alabama.
Deep sensing technology can enhance reconnaissance, surveillance, and long-range fires targeting, George explained. The Army is exploring various platforms, such as high-altitude balloons and unmanned aircraft, to improve sensing capabilities.
The service is experimenting with high-altitude balloons at locations like the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, California, as part of ongoing modernization efforts. Army Futures Command previously established cross-functional teams to address different modernization challenges.
The original cross-functional teams focused on Long-Range Precision Fires, Next-Generation Combat Vehicles, Future Vertical Lift, the Network, and other critical areas. Rainey previously hinted at upcoming changes to the teams as new programs are deployed and new needs emerge.
At the previous Global Force Symposium, Rainey introduced plans for a CFT to address contested logistics, based in Huntsville near Army Materiel Command. This initiative reflects the Army’s ongoing commitment to modernization efforts and readiness for future challenges.
