The U.S. Defense Department plans to conduct joint hypersonics experiments with the Australian military as soon as next year, according to the Pentagon’s chief technology officer. In May, Australia observed DoD’s Technology Readiness Experiment, or T-REX, which was held at Camp Atterbury in Indiana. Hypersonic vehicles can travel and maneuver at speeds of Mach 5 for higher. U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin convened an AUKUS technology summit Dec. 1, where he and leaders from Australia and the U.K. launched several technology collaboration initiatives. Australian officials recently selected Lockheed Martin as its “strategic partner” on the Joint Air Battle Management System.
