The United States and European allies have increased artillery shell and ammunition production, but it still falls short of meeting Ukraine’s needs. Ukraine requires as many as 6,000 rounds daily to hold the territory reclaimed from Russia. The U.S. and European allies are expected to produce 1.3 million 155mm Howitzer rounds this year, with more capacity slated for 2025. However, Ukraine needs 356,400 shells a month for successful execution of battlefield tasks, well below what Russia is capable of producing.
The math currently doesn’t work out well for Ukraine, as the production of ammunition is far below their daily requirements. Though Russia has the shells, they don’t have the bullets. The U.S. is set to produce 2.6 million 155mm rounds per year by 2025, but production is currently lower. In the meantime, Europe and the U.S. are set to increase their production, but the delay in passing the supplement through Congress could cause problems.
