Ukraine said Monday it had foiled 55 Russian attacks in the eastern Donetsk region, a day after admitting a worsening situation on the front line. Moscow claimed Novobakhmutivka as struggling Ukrainian forces await crucial US weapons. The Ukrainian army repulsed 55 attacks in villages north and west of Novobakhmutivka, including heavy fighting in Ocheretyne. These villages are north of Avdiivka, captured by Russian troops in February. Further south, Ukraine’s forces are holding back the enemy in settlements west of Donetsk, including Krasnogorivka. Russian forces, with aviation support, attempted 15 times to break through Ukrainian defences. Krasnogorivka, a key stronghold for Kyiv, lies west of Donetsk and has become more vulnerable. Ukraine’s commander-in-chief said troops had retreated to new defensive lines further west in some areas. Kyiv has also warned Russia may seek victories ahead of its May 9 holiday.
