Ukraine’s western partners recently launched a new electromagnetic coalition to support Kyiv in its electronic warfare efforts against Russia. This coalition involves Germany and nine other countries and adds to eight existing coalitions focused on various military operations, including artillery, fighter jets, and demining efforts.
The coalition’s primary objectives are to ensure control of the electromagnetic spectrum for effective combat operations. Specific goals include safeguarding friendly communication systems, disrupting enemy communications, enhancing persistent reconnaissance, defending against drone threats, and improving the effectiveness of weapon systems. At the administrative level, the coalition will coordinate efforts related to equipment procurement, training, and policy development. It aims not only to address Ukraine’s current military needs but also to establish a framework for future capability development.
Germany, like other nations learning from Ukraine’s battlefield experiences, seeks to gain insights from this collaborative effort to enhance its own future military capabilities.
In addition to the coalition, Germany has announced an additional 11 billion euros (approximately $12.53 billion) in military funding for Ukraine, which will extend through 2029. This funding includes an allocation of 3 billion euros (around $3.4 billion) for the current year.
The funds will be used to procure critical weapon systems, including four IRIS-T air defense systems, 30 PATRIOT guided missiles, 15 Leopard 1A5 main battle tanks, 14 artillery systems, 300 reconnaissance drones, and 100 ground surveillance radars. German Minister of Defence Boris Pistorius emphasized the need for a militarily strong Ukraine, stating, “Only then can the negotiation process lead to a lasting and just peace solution.”
