The U.K. Defence Ministry is partnering with McLaren to upgrade defense projects. McLaren Racing has won 20 Formula 1 world championships and 183 grands prix. The motor-racing team will provide expertise for innovative defense projects, including electrifying armored vehicles through Project Lurcher. McLaren showcased the NEOM McLaren Extreme E and Project Lurcher at BattleLab in Dorset, England. The new partnership aims to improve operational efficiencies and develop electric vehicles for the battlefield.
The Ministry previously awarded a contract to Babcock International for Project Lurcher. The U.K. plans to make most of its land capabilities hybrid or electric by 2035. Former Gen. Mark Carleton-Smith expressed uncertainty about meeting that goal. The partnership with McLaren also aims to attract more candidates in STEM fields to military jobs.
