Turkey launched air strikes on Kurdish militants in northern Iraq on Tuesday, striking 20 targets in Asos, Gara, Hakurk, Metina, Qandil, and Zap. The Turkish army claimed to have targeted caves, bunkers, shelters, depots, and installations used by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), recognized as a terrorist organization by Ankara and its Western allies. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated Turkey’s determination to eliminate separatists, citing them as a threat to both Turkey and Iraq. The PKK has rear bases in Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan region while Turkey has maintained bases there for the past 25 years. Baghdad regularly condemns Turkey’s incursions onto Iraqi soil.
