Gen. David Berger served as Marine Corps commandant from an unspecified date until his retirement in July 2023. After his retirement, Gen. Eric Smith took charge as commandant in September 2023, but briefly went into cardiac arrest on October 29, requiring Gen. Christopher Mahoney to temporarily take over. Gen. Smith is currently recovering and plans to return to work. However, it is uncertain when he will resume his duties, but if he does before the end of the year, he will likely release his commandant’s planning guidance for 2024. During his tenure as acting commandant, Gen. Smith has prioritized continuing Force Design 2030 and emphasized crisis response, modernization, naval integration, recruitment and retention, and Reserve utilization. As of now, the leadership of the Marine Corps beyond 2023 remains unclear. Irene Loewenson is a staff reporter for Marine Corps Times.
