The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces claimed to have captured the 92nd Brigade base near the border with South Sudan in West Kordofan state. The RSF, accused of war crimes and ethnic cleansing, already controls Sudan’s borders with Chad, CAR, and Libya. The base is near the disputed Abyei region, where the UN has called on South Sudan to withdraw forces.
The war in Sudan began in April 2023, causing major impacts on South Sudan, including the rupture of a key pipeline delivering oil to the coast. More than 700,000 refugees have fled to South Sudan since April 2023, mainly from the 2013-18 civil war in South Sudan, creating a heavy burden on the already struggling country.
