The ongoing civil war in Sudan, which has been raging for more than a year, has created one of the worst humanitarian crises in decades. The conflict is between the regular military led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces led by Mohamed Hamdan Daglo. According to Christos Christou, the international president of Doctors Without Borders, the humanitarian response to the crisis is profoundly inadequate. The conflict began in April 2023 and has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and displaced more than nine million people, according to the United Nations. Both sides have been accused of war crimes, including targeting civilians and blocking humanitarian aid, despite warnings of widespread starvation. Rights groups and the United States have also accused the paramilitaries of ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity.
