A Syrian army officer was killed Wednesday in an Israeli air strike in the country’s south, as reported by the official SANA news agency. The attack occurred in the provinces of Quneitra and Daraa, resulting in the officer’s death and material damage. Israel has conducted numerous strikes on Syria since the civil war outbreak, targeting Syrian army positions and Iran-backed fighters, including Hezbollah members.
The frequency of strikes has escalated since Israel’s conflict with Hamas in Gaza began on October 7, following an attack by the Iran-backed Palestinian group. While not publicly acknowledging specific strikes, Israel has consistently stated its opposition to Iran’s expanding presence in Syria.
Since the conflict started in 2011 after anti-government protests were suppressed, over half a million people have died and millions have been displaced in Syria.
