Ukraine has received a second batch of Patriot surface-to-air missiles from Spain as part of its latest military aid package. The delivery is part of a 1 billion euro ($1.1 billion) security agreement signed by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, outlining all of Spain’s military aid to Kyiv for 2024. Spain’s shipment also included Leopard battle tanks, ammunition, anti-drone systems, surveillance and tracking systems, and remote weapon turrets. The number of missiles delivered by Madrid has not been disclosed.
Zelensky highlighted the aid as crucial in strengthening Ukraine’s air defense and safeguarding its civilian population from Russia’s attacks. Spain pledged Patriot missile systems in April in response to Zelensky’s request to NATO members for advanced air defense capabilities to counter Russian air strikes. Other allies, such as the Netherlands and Romania, have also answered Ukraine’s call for aid, with Amsterdam quickly assembling a Patriot system using donated spare parts. The missile system has proven effective in battle, successfully intercepting hypersonic missiles launched by Moscow.
