The Space Force will establish a Space Futures Command to develop and validate forward-looking concepts and emerging missions for the service, as announced by Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman on Feb. 12. The command will explore various systems and resilient architecture needed for space superiority and evaluate necessary components.
Saltzman emphasized the need for the Space Force to have a more robust approach to consider supporting structures and capabilities, military construction, classified facilities, and operational units needed to maintain those capabilities. Additionally, the command will help the service prioritize missions due to growing threats or emerging technologies.
Space Futures Command’s primary functions will be organized into centers, focused on analyzing the threat environment, evaluating potential technologies, and developing warfighting models. Saltzman also aims to establish a small team for early analysis and expects to have a headquarters leadership structure in place by next year.
