In Christchurch, New Zealand, South Korea will export air defense systems to Saudi Arabia as part of a $3.2 billion deal signed in November. The World Defense Show in Saudi Arabia from Feb. 4-8 also marked the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the two countries. The defense industry plans to accelerate in arms trade with Seoul and Arab states due to threats from Houthi militants in Yemen. South Korea also sold arms such as man-portable, anti-tank missiles to Saudi Arabia and will work on joint research and development of weapon systems. The deal will strengthen Korea’s status as an emerging arms supplier.
