Russia reported on Wednesday that fighting in the Kursk border region continued for a second day after an incursion by Ukrainian forces. The defense ministry stated on social media that the operation to destroy Ukrainian army units was ongoing and that the enemy’s advancement into Russian territory had been halted. Kursk regional governor Alexei Smirnov announced that “several thousand” people had been evacuated from the border area, with all mass gatherings canceled. Despite the evacuation efforts, he assured the public that the situation in the region was under control.
According to Russian officials, five people were killed and 24 injured, with 13 individuals hospitalized as a result of the clashes. The defense ministry claimed that 260 Ukrainian soldiers and 50 armored vehicles, including tanks and armored personnel carriers, had been lost. However, this information could not be independently verified. Ukraine has not yet responded to the incursion. A map showing areas controlled by Ukrainian and Russian forces in Ukraine as of August 6 was also shared by Valentin Rakovsky/AFP.
