Rheinmetall has signed a double-digit million euro deal with Spain to supply the Spanish Army with 104,000 mortar rounds. The package will consist of 60mm-, 81mm-, and 120mm-caliber rounds, with ranges from 1.6 to 5 miles (2.6 to 8.3 kilometers), and delivery is set for the end of 2025. Spain plans to provide the ammunition to its infantry units to enhance their ground warfare capabilities.
The agreement follows a recent 208-million euro deal for 94,200 ER02A1 155mm rounds. Rheinmetall emphasized its role as a systems supplier of steep-fire systems. Additionally, the company is teaming up with the EU to ramp up ammo production to address scarcity issues resulting from the war in Ukraine, with 130 million euros allocated to bolster manufacturing lines in Germany, Hungary, Romania, and Spain. This supports the European Commission’s target of producing 2 million shells before 2026.
In another development, Rheinmetall made its first rocket artillery sale by signing a contract to supply an unnamed NATO member with 300 million euros worth of rocket launcher ammunition.
