The soldiers of the 25th Infantry Division are quickly receiving new technology and gaining insights into drone warfare through a new Army fielding program. Under the strategy “transforming in contact,” new gear like drones, electronic warfare, and network capabilities are being distributed for experimentation during training and deployment. Major General Marcus Evans noted that equipment has been fielded within a matter of months, with the 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team in Hawaii already utilizing most of the new equipment.
The use of small drones has helped units enhance their battlefield awareness, allowing squad leaders to see distances of three to five kilometers from their position. While drones offer benefits, challenges such as avoiding collisions with helicopters and identifying enemy drones must be addressed. The division is also introducing new, lightweight body armor, helmets, and equipment like the STEED military cart to improve operational efficiency in jungle environments.
Focus is now shifting towards generating power, with the goal of reducing limitations for light brigades. The introduction of Infantry Squad Vehicles (ISV) allows for rapid troop movement and increased dispersal, providing a challenge for adversaries due to the dispersed formation. ISVs have the capability to move battalion-sized formations over 180 miles, offering a more stealthy alternative to helicopters and trucks.
