In 2023, old-fashioned AI is still proving to be effective in many instances, often not requiring response from machines. This is in contrast to generative AI, which is on the rise according to Deloitte’s 2024 report. Despite the buzz about generative AI, old-fashioned AI is still in use for tasks such as predictive modeling and routine automated approvals. Generative AI technologies are already being used in the government for tasks such as searching and answering questions in English. Pilots of generative AI tools are already live in the public sector ecosystem, prompting the need to further understand the potential of these tools. There is little difference in the rate of adoption of generative AI in commercial industries and the government, but legacy systems in the government pose unique challenges. Computing power remains a high-priority discussion item, particularly for functions like machine learning. Quantum computing is also emerging as a potential new solution to problem-solving.
