The Army has given Lockheed Martin the green light to produce an extended-range version of its Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System. Lockheed was awarded a $200 million contract modification in May to build up to 240 extended range GMLRS, with production taking place in Camden, Arkansas. The extended range version can reach over 150 kilometers, compared to the 70-kilometer range of the original GMLRS. The U.S. has been providing GMLRS to Ukraine since mid-2022 to aid in its defense against Russia. The Army plans to increase GMLRS production to 14,000 rockets per year and is expected to sign a multiyear deal in FY24. There is also a plan to spend $1.2 billion in FY25 to buy 6,408 missiles as part of the anticipated multiyear contract.
