The Pentagon updated its classification policy for space programs on January 17, allowing the Space Force to collaborate more easily.
Assistant Secretary of Defense for Space Policy, John Plumb, explained that the revised policy eliminates outdated classification policies.
Plumb emphasized the need to reduce overclassification that hampers the mission of the warfighter.
The policy specifically addresses the security designation called the Special Access Program (SAP), which severely restricts information sharing for satellite or technology development programs.
The Department plans to apply “minimum classifications” to various programs, reviewing whether they should be managed at the SAP level or a less restrictive designation.
The goal is to share more information with allies and partners, creating deeper relationships.
