The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) intends to utilize the majority of its nearly $1 billion fiscal 2024 budget to expedite existing projects and introduce new ones in technology domains such as counter uncrewed aerial systems and space transport. Congress approved a significant funding increase for DIU in FY24 to bolster its mission of rapidly cultivating and deploying commercial capabilities for the Defense Department. Around $491 million, or 50% of the funding, will be allocated to accelerating priority efforts, while approximately $246 million, or 25%, will go towards launching new projects. DIU plans to release two dozen solicitations for new projects in the coming months.
The organization’s existing priorities include technologies supporting various defense systems, while new projects will focus on software and advanced manufacturing to enhance autonomous systems across multiple domains. DIU’s FY24 spending aims to address critical military operational gaps to bolster national defense capabilities. The remaining 25% of funding will support DIU’s coordination efforts with other Pentagon innovation organizations and the removal of barriers to adopting non-traditional technology. DIU also plans to expand its network of OnRamp Hubs across the U.S. for industry outreach and engagement with the Department of Defense.
