Russia has sent around 10,000 naturalized citizens to fight in Ukraine, according to a top official. Moscow has been accused of pressuring Central Asian migrants to join its armed forces to boost troop numbers. The head of Russia’s Investigative Committee said that around 30,000 migrants who had received citizenship but not registered for military service were caught. Millions of migrant workers, mostly from Central Asia, live in Russia and many have obtained Russian citizenship in recent years. Anti-migrant attitudes are high in Russia, especially after a terror attack in Moscow in March. Police have arrested several suspects from Tajikistan and raids of migrant workplaces have increased.
