The U.S. Navy is delaying the start of construction on the SSN(X) next-generation attack submarine to the early 2040s due to budget constraints.
The Navy is also seeking to delay spending on other modernization programs in its fiscal 2025 budget, including the DDG(X) next-generation destroyer and the F/A-XX next-generation fighter.
The DDG(X) program has already been delayed to a FY32 start, but the Navy is still planning to move forward with construction.
There is no updated timeline for the F/A-XX program at this time.
Navy officials have stated that they are taking risks in scheduling development for these programs in order to prioritize key investments and ensure good acquisition programs.
The Navy is requesting $586.9 million for SSN(X) design and development efforts in FY25, $102.7 million for DDG(X), and $454 million for F/A-XX.
