Top U.S. Navy official Rear Adm. Fred Pyle stated that the Navy’s recent force structure study emphasizes build a lot of frigates and more small, capable ships being distributed throughout the fleet, and the need for a larger, more capable, and more distributed naval force. The study called for a 381-ship fleet. In addition to frigates, the Navy aims to build three large unmanned surface vessels and is expediting the DDG Mod 2.0 program. The Navy has started installing code on individual ships for testing for the Integrated Combat System and plans to deploy entire carrier strike groups or amphibious ready groups with the system in the coming years. Plans include the development of the next-generation destroyer, and Pyle emphasized a transition to a new hull form.
