The Navy’s Fleet Readiness Center East is testing a laser projection system to help the Marine Corps with painting aircraft, aiming to reduce maintenance time. Traditionally, aircraft are painted using a masking technique, but the new system projects insignia directly onto the aircraft for precise painting without the need for extensive masking. Steven Lofy, from the center’s corrosion and wear team, states that the system is easier to use and saves time. The system was first used on a Marine Corps MV-22B Osprey, resulting in an 85 percent decrease in labor hours. The center plans to use the system more broadly by uploading 2D stencils to the software. The Fleet Readiness Center, located at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point in North Carolina, provides maintenance services for Marine Corps aircraft.
