The area near Mazzeh military airport west of Damascus, Syria, was attacked on Friday, with drones entering Syrian airspace from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the defense ministry.
The British-based Observatory reported that the military airport was targeted and noted the presence of Lebanon’s Hezbollah and pro-Iran groups in the area, without stating who was behind the “missile” attack. No casualties were immediately reported, but there were reported explosions heard in the capital.
The defense ministry stated that two drones violated Syrian airspace from the direction of the Golan Heights and were shot down west of Damascus. While neither source named the perpetrator, Israel has launched numerous air strikes on Syria since the onset of the civil war in 2011.
The Israeli army declined to comment on the reports. Israel has increased its efforts against Iran-backed forces in Syria since the start of its war with Hamas in Gaza on October 7.
