Clashes between powerful Libyan armed groups erupted in Tripoli on Thursday night, causing panic among locals celebrating the end of Ramadan. The skirmish lasted about an hour and resulted in no casualties.
The conflict stemmed from a dispute between the Stability Support Authority (SSA) and the Special Deterrence Force (Al-Radaa) in Tripoli’s Abu Salim neighborhood. The confrontation was reportedly sparked by retaliation for the detention of members from each group.
Both the SSA and Al-Radaa evolved from post-Gadhafi era militias and operate independently, though they receive public funds. Their clashes are not uncommon, with previous incidents resulting in casualties.
In response to ongoing security concerns, Interior Minister Imad Trabelsi announced plans for armed groups in Tripoli to be replaced with regular forces. The city has been plagued by violence and instability despite relative calm in recent years.
The situation in Libya remains precarious, with the country divided between the UN-recognized government in Tripoli and a rival administration in the east. Efforts to establish stability and security continue amidst ongoing conflicts between armed factions.
