Western gun makers are exploring small arms to counter small drones, turning cheap weapons into last-resort defenses. Italian gun manufacturer Benelli Armi has seen an increase in demand for shotguns in a counter-drone configuration from NATO countries. The company supplies shotguns combined with special drone ammunition, known as the ALDA round, which is already in use with the French and Italian armed forces. Another player in the counter-drone business is Belgian firm FN Herstal, which developed a container-based perimeter defense system for a NATO-led counter-drone exercise in Italy in March 2022. Soldier-carried infantry weapons are being considered as a defense against exploding drones by some, as stated by a Ukrainian shotgun instructor.
