MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida, avoided the worst as Hurricane Milton passed through the state. The base saw rain, strong winds, fallen trees, flooded areas, and some road closures, but buildings were not flooded and damage was limited. No injuries were reported.
Evacuated personnel and families cannot return yet due to storm debris on roads. Hurricane Milton weakened to a Category 3 storm and made landfall near Siesta Key, south of Tampa. MacDill remains closed and evacuated, with a limited evacuation order in place.
The base evacuated aircraft and personnel ahead of the storm, with some planes stored in hangars and others sent to McConnell Air Force Base in Kansas. MacDill, home to various Air Force wings and commands, has about 5,250 service members, 1,350 civilian personnel, and families living on base.
