The situation for Ukraine on its frontline is likely to steadily deteriorate in the coming weeks. Ukraine’s military intelligence chief, Kyrylo Budanov, stated in an interview that outgunned and outmanned Ukrainian forces are struggling to hold back Russian troops who have gained ground and are expected to escalate their offensive soon.
Budanov warned of a difficult period starting from mid-May, with problems expected on the front. Russia recently claimed to have gained territory near the town of Chasiv Yar, raising concerns in Kyiv that this could pave the way for an advance on other important Donbas towns.
President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed fears that Russian forces aim to capture Chasiv Yar by May 9, a date significant to the Kremlin for marking victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. However, Budanov reassured that while challenges lie ahead, the situation is not catastrophic.
Despite facing an ammunition crisis for months, Kyiv is expected to receive a boost in military aid as the US approved a $61 billion package on Saturday to help Ukraine battle Moscow.
