Kim Jong Un joined troops training on a new tank model and drove one himself during military exercises, as South Korea and the U.S. completed their annual drills. This is the third time Kim observed exercises during the 11-day drills, which he sees as invasion rehearsals. North Korea has increased missile launches and bellicose rhetoric in 2022.
During the tank drills, Kim praised the new tank as the world’s most powerful and urged his troops to prepare for war. South Korean experts believe the tank is ready for deployment after being unveiled in 2020. The tank features a missile launch tube similar to a Soviet weapon system from the 1970s.
North Korea threatened “responsible military activities” in response to the South Korea-U.S. drills, which included computer-simulated training and field exercises. Concerns have grown over North Korea’s military preparations since Kim announced plans in January to rewrite the constitution, solidifying South Korea as its principal enemy.
Kim’s actions suggest a fundamental policy shift towards South Korea. Observers believe Kim aims to use his upgraded arsenal to gain U.S. concessions like lifting sanctions. North Korea is expected to continue testing activities and aggressive rhetoric as South Korea and the U.S. hold elections.
Despite the South Korea-U.S. training ending, North Korea’s activities continue. Analysts warn that North Korea could escalate tensions further as it has been discussing war.
