Italy’s parliament has approved the acquisition of two new FREMM frigates and 132 combat-version Leopard tanks, along with 140 other tank versions. The new purchases are part of increased military spending due to the Ukraine conflict. Italy previously ordered 10 FREMM frigates and will now have a total of 12 with the new orders. The two FREMM EVO vessels will cost €2 billion and come with upgraded combat management systems, radar, electronic warfare suites, sonar, gun, communications, and missile systems. Italy also plans to purchase Leopard 2A8 tanks to replace its ageing Ariete tanks and fulfill NATO commitments. The program will take place over 14 years, with Italian firms adding components to the German tank, with an expected cost of nearly €8.3 billion.
