The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza reported that the Israeli military withdrew tanks and vehicles from Al-Shifa hospital complex after a major operation was launched on March 18. Dozens of bodies were found at the complex, with the Israeli military alleging it was targeting Hamas militants operating from there.
The army described the operation as “precise” and had previously stated that scores of militants were killed in and around Al-Shifa. However, Hamas has denied operating from the health facilities.
The health ministry stated that dozens of bodies, some decomposed, were recovered from the complex, which was burnt down and put out of service by the Israeli military. The destruction inside the complex and surrounding buildings was reported to be extensive.
An AFP journalist reported damage to several buildings in the complex, with some areas showing fire damage. A doctor on the scene mentioned that over 20 dead bodies were recovered, and some were crushed by withdrawing vehicles.
