Israel’s defense chief Herzi Halevi apologized after a strike killed seven aid workers in Gaza on Monday. The workers were part of the World Central Kitchen (WCK) convoy delivering aid. The attack that killed employees from Australia, Britain, Palestine, Poland, and the US-Canada was condemned by world leaders, with demands for an investigation.
WCK mourned the loss of their seven staff members and called the strike a targeted attack. The organization had been coordinating its movements with Israeli forces to provide much-needed aid in Gaza, which has been under an Israeli blockade since the start of the war. After the strike, WCK suspended its operations in the region, deepening concerns about food aid delivery.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged the unintentional killing of the aid workers but did not apologize. Countries like Australia, Britain, and Poland raised concerns and demanded accountability for the deaths. Tensions in the region have also escalated following other attacks and retaliatory actions between Israel, Hamas, and Iran.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in thousands of deaths and led to severe humanitarian crises. Palestinians have also renewed their application to become a full member state in the United Nations amid the continuing unrest.
