The Indian government approved a $4 billion procurement for cruise missiles, air defense weapons, surveillance radars, and fighter jet engines in February 2023. The projects include BrahMos cruise missiles, air defense guns, surveillance radars, and new engines for MiG-29 fighters.
The BrahMos missile deal is expected to be signed in March 2023, with the order including 220 weapons for Indian frigates and destroyers. The contract will consist of standard and extended-range BrahMos missiles, with 75% of them locally made.
India is also exporting BrahMos missiles to the Philippines under a $375 million deal. Sudarshan air defense systems worth $844 million were approved for the Army to protect installations and border areas in India.
Larsen & Toubro is providing the Sudarshan air defense systems, including radars and 40mm guns. The approval follows a 2022 request for procurement for ammunition rounds to accompany the guns.
Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. will manufacture new RD-33MK engines for MiG-29 fighters in collaboration with Russia, with the project worth about $639 million. These projects demonstrate India’s focus on indigenous input while allowing for foreign collaboration.
