The Navy destroyer Carney was on a routine deployment when it became the first American warship to defend against Iran-backed Houthi missile attacks in the Red Sea on Oct. 19, 2023. Since then, the Navy has faced sustained attacks in the region, forcing the fleet to continuously refine its tactics and procedures to counter the threat. The strategic goal of protecting merchant vessels passing through the region has remained unfulfilled, despite tactical successes. Navy leaders recognize the need for sustainable efforts in countering the Houthi threat and continue to explore new approaches to maintain a strong presence in the region. As the conflict persists, Navy personnel remain committed to readiness, sustainment, and lethality in the face of ongoing challenges.
