House lawmakers want the Air Force to make its electric “flying car” concept a reality.
A subcommittee’s section of the House Armed Services Committee’s proposed fiscal 2025 National Defense Authorization Act would require the Air Force and the Pentagon to set up a working group dedicated to transitioning its Agility Prime concept into operational programs.
Agility Prime is a program run by AFWERX to develop electric vertical takeoff-and-landing aircraft.
The Air Force has experimented with electric aircraft for various purposes, including transporting spare parts, cargo, and conducting simulated casualty evacuations.
The HASC’s proposed NDAA would require the Air Force to establish an Agility Prime transition working group to identify programs that could use electric VTOLs or autonomous flight capabilities.
The working group would involve various defense officials and be responsible for developing a strategy to transition Agility Prime capabilities to other military program offices.
By the end of September 2025, the Air Force secretary would need to submit reports on the military’s progress towards developing electric VTOL aircraft and transitioning technologies to acquisition or research programs.
