The House Armed Services Committee will attempt to fund a second Virginia-class submarine in fiscal 2025 to counteract potential harm to the industrial base caused by the Navy’s request for only one boat.
The Navy, which has been acquiring two Virginia-class attack submarines annually since 2011, asked for just one boat in its FY25 budget request.
In response, the committee has allocated $1 billion towards partially funding the second submarine in FY25, with plans for further funding in subsequent fiscal years.
Despite constraints from the Fiscal Responsibility Act, the committee did not make specific cuts to accommodate the additional funds for the second submarine.
Chairman Rep. Mike Rogers instructed the committee to build the best budget possible, considering the services’ spending needs holistically.
