Palestinian militant group Hamas announced on Monday that their leader in Lebanon, Fatah Sharif Abu al-Amine, was killed in an air strike on his home in the Al-Bass camp in south Lebanon along with his wife, son, and daughter. The strike also targeted a Palestinian refugee camp near the city of Tyre for the first time.
The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) reported that three of its members were killed in a separate strike in Beirut’s Kola district. Israel has been targeting Hamas officials in Lebanon since the start of the Gaza war almost a year ago, including the killing of Hamas deputy leader Saleh al-Aruri in January and Hamas commander Samer al-Hajj in August.
Lebanon’s official Palestinian refugee camps were established for those displaced during the 1948 war around Israel’s creation. The Lebanese army traditionally avoids interference in the camps, leaving security matters to the Palestinian factions.
