The Finnish government, led by Defense Minister Antti Hakkanen, is planning to build a TNT explosives factory in response to high demand amid the ongoing Ukraine war. As reported by Yleisradio Oy, Poland is currently the only country in the European Union with a TNT factory. The explosive is used in artillery and mortar shells and is more cost-effective to produce than newer alternatives. Talks with business representatives and investors have already begun, with a decision on the factory location expected in the spring.
Hakkanen emphasized the need for more explosives production and stated that a quick decision could lead to production starting within a year or two. A significant amount of funding has been allocated for ammunition production in Finland, with 32.5 million euros received from the EU in March and 24 million euros granted by the ministry of defense in December. The defense minister also mentioned discussing the matter with other Nordic countries to ensure regional coordination on the issue.
