Rocket Lab is not likely to launch its new medium-lift vehicle by the end of the year, impacting new rocket startups from handling Space Force satellite launches. The National Space Security Launch Phase 3 was split into two groups, with Lane 1 for medium-lift launches to support emerging companies like Rocket Lab. Rocket Lab’s Neutron launch may not be ready by year’s end, with completion of launch equipment vaults expected in Nov. Companies like Relativity and Blue Origin have taken years to complete launch sites.
Space Force is relying on established companies like SpaceX, ULA, and Blue Origin for satellite launches if new companies are not ready. Some concerns are raised about the readiness of companies bidding for Lane 1 launches. Space Systems Command declined to comment on the bid process. In case new companies can’t handle year one launches, SpaceX and ULA can step in.
