The Israeli army reported that 24 soldiers were killed in Gaza on October 27, the deadliest toll since the start of the ground operation. Of those killed, 21 soldiers died when rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) fire hit a tank near two buildings. The attack occurred at around 4 pm on Monday and all those killed were reservists.
Most of the force was inside and near the two buildings that collapsed as a result of the explosion. The troops had planted explosives in the buildings after identifying them as “terrorist infrastructure” in the area. Extracting bodies buried under the rubble was a complicated operation that lasted until the last hours.
Adding to the day’s deaths, three other soldiers were previously announced, bringing the total to 24 fatalities. Israel’s offensive against Hamas in Gaza began on October 7, after a Hamas attack resulted in around 1,140 deaths, mostly civilians. According to the health ministry of the Hamas-run territory, at least 25,295 people have been killed in the retaliatory offensive, the majority of whom were women, children, and adolescents.
