Lawmakers are seeking more information from the Department of the Air Force about its significant reorganization plan announced in February. This reorganization is aimed at preparing the Air Force and Space Force for potential conflict with China, termed a “reoptimization for great power competition.” The plan includes the creation of an Integrated Capabilities Command and changes to existing organizations to improve readiness.
The Department of the Air Force has not provided sufficient explanation for the reorganization, implementation details, and budget requirements, according to lawmakers. They are requesting a breakdown of costs, organizational changes, and programmatic effects before moving forward with the plan. The Air Force has stated it will keep lawmakers informed as the reorganization progresses.
The Government Accountability Office would also be involved in reporting to Congress on the planned reorganization, detailing cost factors, timelines, and potential impacts on joint and coalition forces. Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall mentioned that the plan is not expected to require a significant increase in resources, with a focus on utilizing existing assets to minimize costs.
