Russia is outgunning Ukrainian forces sixfold on the front lines, causing losses of troops and positions, according to Ukraine’s commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrsky. He stated that the defense forces are facing a significant ammunition disadvantage and are struggling with little or no weapons and ammunition, making the situation tense in some areas.
Syrsky indicated that Russia has increased aviation activity and is using guided aerial bombs to destroy Ukrainian positions. Ukraine is requesting the United States Congress to pass a long-stalled $60-billion military aid package for Kyiv to receive more air defense systems and missiles.
Despite recapturing territory near the eastern city of Kharkiv from Russia in 2022, Russia continues to attack the border region. Syrsky warned against Russia attempting to retake Kharkiv, stating it would be fatal for them. Lack of resources and ammunition allowed Russia to build heavy defenses in the south, leading to human and equipment losses for Ukraine.
Russia seized the frontline city of Avdiivka due to constant bombardment with guided aerial bombs, compromising Ukraine’s defense integrity. The lack of artillery ammunition hindered an effective counter-battery fight, forcing Syrsky to withdraw from Avdiivka to avoid encirclement and save lives.
